Defending champion and world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz has been in cruise control as he set out to defend his title. He had no issues in his round 4 matchup against Matteo Arnaldi who he swept in straight sets of 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. The Spaniard has in fact dropped just one set up until this point – in the third round against Dan Evans. He has looked spry and confident and will be looking to cement his status as the best in the business right now. This will probably be his first real test, but he still starts off as an overwhelming favorite against an opponent that has tested him on this hardcourt surface.
Alexander Zverev hasn’t had a smooth sailing since defeating Aleksandar Vukic in the opening round. But he has come through and will be looking to cause an unlikely upset here. He needed 5 sets in the previous round against the big-serving Italian Jannik Sinner. Despite getting into the match as the underdog, Zverev overcame exhaustion and took maximum advantage of Sinner’s cramps to win it 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and booked his ticket for this quarterfinal. He has shown a knack for playing the long game after playing 4 setters in the 2nd and 3rd round against Daniel Altmaier and Grigor Dimitrov
There is no doubt that Alcaraz will have the fresher legs here and it remains to be seen how fast Zverev will take to recover from the grueling rounds he has played, particularly the 5-setter in the last round. We fancy the Spaniard to come out with guns blazing as he looks to put Zverev to the sword. We therefore feel there is value in backing Alaraz to overcome a handicap -1.5 Games to win the opening set.
Tip: 1st Set Handicap -1.5 Games Alacarz
